Intersectoral labor migration and agriculture in the United States and Japan

In spite of important differences in their agricultural sectors, the past century has seen a significant decline number people employed agriculture U.S. and Japan. Economic models intersectoral labor migration focus on expected return differentials as primary cause from one sector to another. Empirical applications typically assume that occurs soon differential exceeds Marshallian costs, but recent work focused embedding decision real options framework. Structural institutional elements can also affect speed at which share declines. We consider factors influencing Japan using aggregate equations several definitions differentials. show options, although relevant household level, have limited implications for sector-level empirical models. Our estimates are inconclusive regarding importance trigger decision, with heterogeneity across two countries definitions. argue this wage relationship is driven by structures sectors.
